Chao announced the Federal Aviation Administration will award $659.8 million in airport infrastructure grants, the second allotment of $3.18 billion in the Airport Improvement Program funding. County leaders expect to pick up discussions where they left off earlier in year with prospective buyers for Atchison Senior Village, the county long-term care facility. Commissioners have publicly entertained the possibility of selling Senior Village since November 2015. On Oct. 24, 2017, commissioners publicly announced their intentions to sell the county-owned facility. It was Nov. 1, 2017, when commissioners took the facility off the market for a 60-day period and entered exclusive negotiations with Recover-Care. A storm described as “brief but violent” that moved through Topeka on Thursday left 200 downed power lines, streets littered with trees and limbs, and damage to area businesses. Friday became a day of cleanup and repair. Finney County network issues throw wrench in county services

Finney County’s computer network has been shut down twice over the last week in order to protect county data after malware and viruses attacked the network through emails, and with email and internet down, some county departments have been struggling in recent days to provide services. The county network was shut down on Tuesday morning — the second time in a week — in an attempt to protect data while the malware was located, removed and until preventive safeguards could be put in place. The City of Arkansas City might get back into the large waste-hauling business, or require a fee for those who do it now. A discussion led by City Manager Nick Hernandez on how to handle that service took place this week at the City Commission meeting. A candidate for the Leavenworth County Commission says he will not have to step down for his position on the Leavenworth Board of Education if he is elected to the commission. Ark City PD video goes viral

Ark City cops and locals recently participated in the LipSync Challenge and posted the video on the ACPD Facebook page, which attracted 81,000 views since it was uploaded on July 10. During the creation of the video, they used 130 popsicles, locally popular mascot costumes such as Tiger the Tank from Cowley College, Daren the D.A.R.E. lion, Detective McGruff the dog and Sally the bulldog from ACHS. The City of Valley Center could drop curbside recycling service. The council on July 17 learned that the city's franchise trash and recycling hauler, Waste Management, wants a monthly fee increase to cover the cost of recycling, even though its contract with the city through 2020 doesn't call for one. A proclamation encouraging Roeland Park businesses to pay a living wage to their employees was unanimously adopted during Monday’s city council meeting. “Businesses who pay livable wages inspire worker loyalty and an improved business ethic, which in turn decreases turnover, increases sales and thereby contributes to a solid tax base,” the proclamation reads.
