A candidate for the Leavenworth County Commission says he will not have to step down for his position on the Leavenworth Board of Education if he is elected to the commission.
Mike Carney is a Republican candidate for the Leavenworth County Commission’s 1st District. He will face three other Republicans in the Aug. 7 primary.
Carney also serves as the president of the Leavenworth school board.
During a meeting Wednesday, fellow school board member Nancy Klemp suggested Carney would have to resign from the board if he is elected to the County Commission.
Carney said Wednesday’s board meeting was not the time to discuss the matter.
“But you’re wrong,” he said.
Klemp said she had talked to an attorney about the matter.
Carney has said he plans to continue serving on the Leavenworth Board of Education if he is elected to the County Commission.
