2018-11-08T07:05:35-06:00November 8th, 2018|

After two meetings with lengthy discussions, and a whole two hour work session devoted to the subject, the Wellington City Council quickly passed the 2018 amended changes to the city animal ordinance. By a 6-0 vote, the council passed the ordinance with no discussion at its regular meeting Tuesday night. The new ordinance defines what is considered a “dangerous” dog and what animals owners can have within the city limits. The revised codes were adapted from the City of Wichita. One provision just recently added to the ordinance included a “adequate lighting” of a pet enclosure. (Read more: Sumner NewsCow)

Wellington council to vote on new animal ordinance which specifically define ‘dangerous’ dogs

2018-11-06T09:01:11-06:00November 6th, 2018|

The Wellington City Council will be voting this Tuesday on a new animal ordinance that will literally bring more “teeth” to the existing law for those citizens with vicious and problematic animals — especially dogs. The new ordinance, if adopted, will also more closely define what type of animals Wellington citizens are allowed to have within the city limits. One of the biggest changes under the proposed stipulations is giving animal control officers the authority to immediately address the viciousness of a dog and take immediate action – which includes the option of killing it. Developers involved in the Dollar Tree project paved 17th Street north of the new store over the weekend, and Wellington city officials are not real happy with the situation. As part of the overall agreement, the developer was supposed to do that project, but they were also to allow the city to inspect the work as it proceeded and they were to meet certain specifications. City officials discovered on Monday the work had been done over the weekend. Dollar Tree officials are targeting for an opening date of Oct. 25. City Manager Shane Shields told the council at Tuesday’s meeting that [...]

2018-08-20T06:42:48-05:00August 19th, 2018|

The Wellington City Council wants to clean the city up, but they don’t want to take a heavy handed approach to get there. The council heard from Winfield Environmental Inspector John Adams at a work session meeting Thursday and talked about various ideas to improve the city’s appearance. Adams said he spends three hours per day looking around Winfield to find areas that need cleaning up. He said they are more proactive in their approach, and not complaint driven as many towns are. Adams said he tries to get a buy in from people, as opposed to forcing them to clean [...]

2018-08-10T11:27:21-05:00August 10th, 2018|

The recent spat of high-profile thefts and robberies brought a Wellington woman to the council meeting in quest of initiating a neighborhood watch program. Tunie Caudillo-Sparman addressed the council at its regular meeting this week asking that a neighborhood watch initiative be set up in which neighbors and citizens work together to stop what is perceived to be a dramatic increase in crime. Wellington Police Chief Tracy Heath said he is all for a proactive stance against crime, and is open to suggestions. However, statistically, crime is not up in Wellington. In fact, it is down from 2017. (Read more: Sumner [...]
