Mulvane Old Settlers Days celebrates American Legion post with theme

Mulvane’s oldest and largest annual event, Mulvane Old Settlers Days, will return next weekend with a patriotic theme. The festival is held the third weekend of each August, this year from Aug. 16 to Aug. 18. The 2019 theme is “Centennial of Honor,” representing 100 years since the American Legion was founded in the United States. Mulvane’s American Legion post is one of the oldest in the nation. The Paul Stewart Irwin Post 136 was first granted a temporary charter in November 1919, only months after the very first post was chartered in Washington, D.C. Neosho Ridge awards wind farm building contract

The Neosho Ridge Wind project is one step closer to beginning construction. Infrastructure and Energy Alternatives, Inc. (IEA), a leading infrastructure construction company with specialized energy and heavy civil expertise, has been awarded the contract to build the wind farm in southwest Neosho County. IEA is one of the top builders of wind energy projects in the US, said Jade Scheele, senior development manager for Neosho Ridge. Belle Plaine is now one step closer to having a quiet zone within city limits, the Belle Plaine News reports. The Belle Plaine City Council passed Ordinance No. 1677 at its July 18 meeting. Derby Public Schools is considering selling its current administrative center to the local American Legion post. Following the July 8 board of education meeting, Derby Public Schools received a $75,000 bid from the American Legion Post 408 for the administrative center, 120 E. Washington St. Post 408 was formerly headquartered at the VFW Post 7253 building on 101 S. Baltimore Ave. On June 30, the post left the building and began searching for their own space. Mulvane council tables proposal for bike share program

At its July 15 meeting, the Mulvane City Council voted to table a proposal to develop a bike share program in the city after a discussion about liability. After hearing the bike share proposal from Robert Brown at its July 1 meeting, city officials discussed potential liability for injury or damage with the city attorney. If the city chooses to endorse the program, the attorney’s suggestion is to take out a liability and property damage policy, which would cost about $2,000. The economy is helping Derby’s fiscal picture

A combination of factors has led to the city of Derby having more money in its general fund balance than originally projected. It has $1.6 million additional, which is due to a number of staff vacancies, lower expenses and higher revenue from sales and taxes along with franchise fees. In addition, higher short-term interest rates helped. Allen County checks cost of adding Chanute to 911 service

...after crunching the numbers, Allen County 911 Communications Director Angela Murphy estimates it would cost about $167,000 annually to absorb the city of Chanute into its emergency system. Murphy suggested three more employees would be needed, which would entail additional licensing fees. Chanute currently pays $180,000 for 911 services through Neosho County, but has been unhappy with the results, which have not improved despite 3-5 percent fee increases, Murphy said. Firefighter dresses up scrapped hydrants in Chanute

Between working as a Chanute firefighter and part-time with the ambulance service, a Chanute man has found stress relief in painting fire hydrants. Jeff Baum, a member of the Chanute Fire Department who also works for Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center EMS, said he has painted two fire hydrants over the past two years as a hobby, and plans to do a couple more. The hydrants he paints are scrapped ones, and no longer in active use. “I’ve always wanted one,” Baum said.
