Leavenworth residents now have the opportunity to hear from city officials through podcasts. Leavenworth Mayor Mark Preisinger and City Manager Paul Kramer have recorded two of the audio recordings so far. Kramer said city officials are looking for suggestions from members of the public regarding topics for future podcasts. “We’re trying to get some public feedback on topics they want to hear about,” he said. Though Jayhawks and Tar Heels aren’t typically thought of as allies, the cities of Lawrence and Chapel Hill, N.C., are teaming up this week. A group of 80 people, including Chapel Hill elected officials, business owners, nonprofit directors and university officials, arrived in Lawrence on Sunday for a three-day visit during which they hope to learn from local leaders. The Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce CVB wanted the Shrine Bowl. On Monday, the Chamber announced it will indeed get the high school all-star game in 2021. The Kansas Shrine Bowl Board of Directors voted to bring the Kansas Shrine Bowl to Hutchinson in June 2021. The annual Shrine Bowl is expected to bring thousands of fans to Gowans Stadium and over $2 million in economic impact to the Hutchinson community. (Read more: Hutch Post)

The Buhler City Council will take the next step in the possible relocation of the city’s grocery store during Tuesday’s regular meeting. The council will seek approval to annex a parcel of land on the northwest corner of 82nd Avenue and Buhler Road. If all goes as planned, Hometown Foods would move from the downtown area to that location. Most of the planning and zoning issues have already been resolved. A big vote is scheduled in Merriam, Kan., Monday to approve plans for a new community center that many residents don't want. Last year, voters approved a sales tax to help pay for the $30 million project. It would include a gym, jogging track and indoor aquatics center. A group called "Merriam Concerned Citizens" claims the swimming pool they've enjoyed for years is being replaced with a much smaller outdoor pool. For close to 18 months now, the city of Mission and private individuals have been researching the feasibility of creating an off-leash dog park in or near the city. Now northeast Johnson County residents are being asked to go to missionks.org and take a short survey on the idea. The city said a Mission Dog Park Task Force was established in February 2017 and met six times last year. Hutchinson USD 308 could have a new superintendent for 2019-2020 selected by January 2019. “The pool is much smaller than it was just three years ago,” Sechrist told the Hutchinson school board. A comparable school district - Salina’s - is conducting a superintendent search, too, spurring Hutchinson to keep its search process on a fast-moving timeline. Shawnee County fined its ambulance service provider more than three times as much for late response times during the first six months of this year as it did during that same time period last year, figures show. The provider, American Medical Response Ambulance Co., nevertheless remains in substantial compliance with its contract with the county, said county ambulance compliance officer Nelson Casteel. AMR paid the county fines totaling $17,920 for the first six months of this year, compared to $5,821 for that same period last year, according to figures Casteel provided the commission. On Wednesday, the Holcomb City Council will revisit its review of a former Holcomb police officer’s request for a special concealed carry identification card, which the mayor and several councilmembers are concerned may leave the city liable in case of an incident through the officer’s work.
