Officials at a Kansas town are working to keep flood waters out as many of the major roads into and out of the town are closed. Flooding along the Little Arkansas River in Harvey County has led to closures of four of the six main roads into Halstead, and city crews and volunteers have closed one of three gates along a flood control levee. Massive flooding Wednesday across south-central Kansas led to multiple road closings that forced semi and commuter traffic into Cowley County, which itself was soaked by dangerous levels of water that led to at least three rescues, a sandbag operation to save a business, and warnings from emergency personnel to stay away from flooded areas. Scott City weighs new policy for citizen issues

If you’re accustomed to contacting a Scott City Councilman about an issue and expecting them to bring it up at the next meeting, that’s about to change. The council is in the process of adopting policy which would require citizens to appear in person at meetings when they have issues they would like the city to address. City of Topeka advises people to avoid waterways due to excess water in storm, sanitary sewer systems

The city of Topeka has advised Topeka residents to avoid contact with waterways flowing through the city because of heavy rains causing excess water in storm and sanitary sewer systems. In a news release, city spokeswoman Molly Hadfield said storm water can enter the sewer system through illegally connected residential sump pumps and roof drains. The excess water is causing areas of the system to flow into nearby waterways, Hadfield said. Hadfield said the advisory doesn’t affect tap water. City of Marion awarded grant from Kansas Historical Society

Marion could have a designated downtown historical district in about a year after the city hires a consultant with a grant from the Kansas Historical Society. The society announced the $9,750 grant Saturday. "The endgame is to put together a historic district so people can sell tax credits to do remodeling," city administrator Roger Holter said.If a historical district is designated in downtown Marion, and the district is listed on the state or national historical registers, property owners can apply for the tax credits to sell in order to raise money for restoration of their buildings. Cheney Reservoir on the rise as flooding continues

Not only are the rivers rising in Reno County, but the water levels are also going up at Cheney Reservoir. As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, the water level at Cheney was just under 1,425 feet. That’s almost 3 feet above normal. Officials at the state park say that anything above 3 ½ feet will start to impact camping and picnic areas. The Ninnescah River is running more than 4 feet above flood stage in some areas and lake levels are expected to continue rising. (Read more: Hutch Post)

Lenexa will take ‘wait and see’ approach on non-discrimination ordinance as cases on LGBTQ rights head for Supreme Court

Before the city of Lenexa takes any action on a potential non-discrimination ordinance to create legal protections for LGBTQ residents and employees, the city council is waiting to see what the U.S. Supreme Court decides on three civil rights cases. While other cities in northeast Johnson County have adopted nondiscrimination ordinances to provide protections for LGBTQ individuals, the Lenexa council in March decided to wait and see if Kansas legislators would adopt a state bill to provide those protections. City of Newton messaging system sending area warnings

A city text messaging system issued five different flood warnings, with different expiration times and dates, May 7 following several storm filled nights in the area. Reno County officials issued an emergency declaration about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday due to anticipated flooding in the county and advised residents who live in flood-prone areas to prepare to evacuate before their property is inundated.
