Spring is starting to warm the air and green up the parks in northeast Kansas, and Kyle Goracke is ready for some disc golf.
The Marysville resident recently installed 10 disc golf baskets in Marysville City Park as part of a new nine-hole pocket course. The course is to have a test period over the next several months. The baskets were purchased with funds raised from local businesses after Goracke sought community support for a new course.
A 10th basket was placed as a practice basket. It was donated by Innova Discs, a national disc golf equipment company.
Last year, City Council argued about whether to place the course in the park, with some members saying it posed a safety threat because it wound its way near park camping areas and play areas.
Other members said the park is full of recreational activities which all pose some risks and disc golf is no different.
Crowds showed up at council meetings in support of the course, saying the park is a good, central venue for all ages to play disc golf and that it encourages physical activity.
The council ultimately gave the course a chance with a six-month test period.
