The Brown County Commission voted 2-1 Monday morning to pass a resolution that would set a special election to implement a half-cent county-wide retailers sales tax for 10 years with proceeds to benefit the Hiawatha Community Hospital to provide health services in the county. The vote came after nearly an hour of discussion by the commissioners, County Attorney Kevin Hill and representatives of the city and hospital. It also comes after a joint advisory committee – working to help the hospital manage its financial crisis – gave its recommendation to help the hospital after almost two months of meetings and conducting research.
