A generic, white flag with a swirl and the words “City of Hutchinson” came down and up went a more symbolic flag that a group of community members hopes will bring about a sense of pride.
The Hutchinson flag went up at 23rd and Severance streets on Tuesday afternoon — a few hours after the city council approved it as the official city flag. A grassroots effort started 10 months ago to design a flag using community input from three town hall meetings and specific guidelines.
The result, chosen by a selection committee from more than 50 designs, was the white, gold and blue flag with a gold compass rose designed by Jason Depew.
“I am just so proud that our community was able to take this project this far,” Depew said in a message. “I am honored to have been a part of it. I have been amazed by how much positive support the community has shown thus far.”
