The Hiawatha City Commission met on Monday evening, and with all commissioners present, heard from Katina Vonderschmidt, who would like to start a program called Hiawatha’s Hometown Heroes.
Vonderschmidt says two other towns in Kansas – Neodesha and Topeka – have similar displays, which feature banners of military veterans on downtown light poles.
The commission agreed that Vonderschmidt could move forward with her plans, which she said would include a small board or committee to help tailor the idea to the community of Hiawatha. Mayor Collins suggested Commissioner Toni Hull as the first board member, and said that Vonderschmidt should stay in contact with City Administrator Mike Nichols.
