Saline County commissioners have decided not to open the Halstead Road bridge to limited traffic prior to the completion of construction work.
Commissioners had been considering opening the bridge, located west of Salina and north of State Street, to empty grain trucks in order to alleviate the effects of the closure on wheat farmers traveling to and from the grain elevator.
During a Wednesday afternoon meeting, Commissioner Rodger Sparks voiced his opposition.
“It’s just like going to a doctor,” he said. “You broke your bone. The doctor said your cast is coming off today, but don’t go play football for three weeks. And you go and play that afternoon.”
There currently is heavy traffic in the area. Commissioner Jim Weese said he parked near the bridge for an hour on Wednesday and saw a grain truck drive by every 15 seconds.
