Three hundred county residents had signed a petition by early this week asking Marshall County commissioners to allow a public vote on a proposed half-cent sales tax for Community Memorial Healthcare.

Community Memorial Healthcare’s board hopes to get 350 before taking the petition to commissioners at their 8:30 a.m. meeting on Monday. Kracht said the hospital board and administration chose 350 as a goal for the petition because that is about 10 percent of Marshall County voters who cast a ballot in the 2014 general election.

“We feel 350 is a significant number of voters in our county. That number has said they’d like to have a choice,” Kracht said.CMH faces financial challenges as uninsured and under-insured residents increase and as the population ages, requiring the hospital to serve more Medicare patients.
