Salina drive-thru recycling center to open Wednesday morning

The new Salina Drive-thru Recycling Center (SDRC) will open, Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at 8 a.m. with a public ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by the City Manager and City Commissioners. The SDRC will open for business to the public immediately following the ceremony. The SDRC is located at 125 W. North Street (on the corner of Santa Fe Avenue and North Street). Normal business hours will be Wednesday-Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. The SDRC is open to all Salina and Saline County residents. (Read more: The Salina Post)

Sales tax decrease in Abilene starting Sunday

According to a release from the Abilene Area Chamber of Commerce, effective Sunday, the Abilene tax rate on retail sales will drop to 8.75%. The decrease is due to the expiration of the .35% special tax that was implemented in 2008 to pay for renovations to the Abilene Public Library and City Pool. The Abilene sales tax will drop again in 2023 with the sunset of a 0.25 tax implemented for Abilene city streets. (Read more: The Salina Post)

Engineers give Kansas a ‘C’ for infrastructure, but roads barely pass

Kansas received a passing grade for its highways when the state’s chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers released its latest “infrastructure report card.” However, the engineers also warned that sweeping cuts to Kansas Department of Transportation funding are still causing roadways to suffer. Kansas earned a C on the report card, which ranks the quality of state infrastructure in nine categories, such as bridges, roads, energy and drinking water. The City of Salina Parks and Recreation Draft Master Plan is complete and available online at http://salina-ks.gov/parksandrecreation-masterplan. The purpose of the Master Plan is to set goals and benchmarks for the future of parks and sports facilities. The overall vision of the Master Plan is to improve the spaces where community members go to make connections, enjoy the outdoors, and participate in recreational activities. The plan process includes independent analysis of parks and facilities, programming, agreements with outside agencies, staff interviews, public input meetings, and public surveys. Salina city manager takes job in Springfield

The longtime city manager in Salina will take over the top administrative job in the city of Springfield, Missouri. Gage has been city manager in Salina for 13 years. Before that he was city manager in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and De Soto, Missouri. Gage is a graduate of Missouri Southern State College in Joplin.
