Don’t flake out: City of Lawrence seeks flurry of names for snow plows

It’s on: The City of Lawrence is challenging residents to participate in a snowplow naming contest. “From December 6 through December 13, Lawrence residents can submit their most imaginative, hilarious, or heartwarming snowplow name ideas,” according to a city news release Friday morning. Lawrence residents can visit lawrenceks.org/snow to submit a creative name suggestion. Submissions close at 11:59 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13. Lawrence school board to consider approving policy limiting cell phone use

The Lawrence school board on Monday will consider approving the final draft of a new policy that would implement a generally cell phone-free instructional day effective in January. Instructional time is defined in the final draft as time “a student spends receiving instruction in a school setting.” All cell phones and other personal electronic devices “must be turned off and stored out of sight” during school hours, according to the draft. Lawrence school board members on Monday gave initial approval to a draft cell phone policy, despite district administrators proposing guidance that directly conflicts with the draft as it’s written. Board member Anne Costello said she was “a little surprised” when reviewing a two-page document that was attached to the board’s agenda sometime after Saturday but before the meeting Monday. Kansas school districts showed caution in allowing transfers through a new open enrollment option that lets students attend school outside their home district, data presented Wednesday to the Kansas State Board of Education showed. Lawrence City Commission approves land development code update, despite public outcry

Lawrence city commissioners heard from more than 50 community members Tuesday, most asking them to hit pause on the updated land development code. Ultimately, they voted to approve the update. The land development code regulates development in the city, including zoning regulations, residential occupancy limits and more. The document has wide-ranging implications for the growth and direction of the city. In the summer of 2022, the city started reviewing the code to make it simpler and aligned with goals like sustainability and housing. City of Lawrence clears Amtrak camp; former residents look for path forward

A parade of dump trucks carried away what remained of the camp where people were living behind the Amtrak station in East Lawrence throughout the day Wednesday, including memorials for camp residents who had died. The City of Lawrence Homeless Response Team gave Amtrak residents two months’ notice that the camp was closing. But, as many people in houses would likely not start moving months before they’re evicted, many of the camp residents wanted to stay there until the day they had to leave.
