2022-09-05T18:47:50-05:00September 4th, 2022|

A southeast Kansas native is developing new housing opportunities across the country. Columbus has become the testing site for this project. After facing problems finding her own home, Abby Nelson decided to take matters into her own hands. Now, her dream is slowly becoming a reality before her very eyes in her hometown, with the first Micromansion under construction right now. "This is our first standing it up, making sure it goes together right, making sure our instructions make sense that we would send to a builder," said Abby Nelson, Micromansion Founder. ‘A hole in the ground’ and other quirky curiosities build up small Kansas towns

2022-09-05T18:48:32-05:00September 4th, 2022|

One day in 1973, The Wall Street Journal published a review of Kansas tourist attractions. It was not kind. “Kansas is trying to promote tourism,” the Journal noted, “but it really doesn’t have a heck of a lot to promote.” The column singled out the godfathers of Kansas roadside tourism — the World’s Largest Ball of Twine in Cawker City, the World’s Largest Hand-Dug Well in Greensburg and the folk art town of Lucas — for particular ridicule, with pause breaks in the spots where the Journal expected its audience to chuckle at Kansas’ expense. Local newspapers from Salina to Lawrence [...]

As utility rates continue to rise, Lawrence leaders interested in expanding limited utility assistance program

2022-09-05T18:37:43-05:00September 4th, 2022|

City utility bills have increased significantly in recent years, and the proposed budget for 2023 includes another increase. As the water/sewer, storm water and solid waste rates that make up residents’ utility bills went up over the years, commissioners more than once suggested expanding the city’s very limited utility assistance program. Some changes eventually occurred last year, when the city created an additional utility assistance program. However, that program, rather than using city funds, is funded by donations from other utility customers, and has provided assistance to only eight people so far. Exactly how the existing programs might expand is yet [...]

An appeals court has sided with Shawnee County and the city of Topeka over a false identity suit

2022-09-05T18:38:00-05:00September 4th, 2022|

The Kansas Court of Appeals sided Friday with Shawnee County and the city of Topeka in upholding the dismissal of a lawsuit filed against them by William Dean Blue, who was incorrectly identified in a news release as a crime suspect. Blue in August 2019 sued the city and county governments over a situation in which a man arrested after a robbery and chase falsely identified himself as Blue to police, who shared that information with news media before the suspect's true identity came to light. Blue said he wasn't involved with the incident and had never met the suspect. The [...]

Rush County’s only grocery store closes in La Crosse

2022-09-02T14:47:20-05:00September 2nd, 2022|

With the closing of the only grocery store in La Crosse, all of Rush County is without a place to get fresh meat and produce. For now, locals have to find a new place to shop for food. Some Rush County residents will have to drive 30-plus minutes for groceries, depending on where they live in the county. In La Crosse, that means going to Hays or Great Bend. Elsie Harmon is a lifelong Rush County resident. She’s depended on the nearby grocery store, but now will have to set aside a day just to shop for food. “Going to have [...]

2022-09-02T07:28:04-05:00September 2nd, 2022|

In a continuing effort to evaluate short-term rentals like Airbnbs and VRBOs, the Overland Park City Council has asked the staff to draft a nuisance party ordinance, which will help authorities hold the property owners responsible if large parties or gatherings violate city code. The staff also has been asked to investigate the potential licensing of short-term rentals, to keep identifying those that are operating in the city and to make residents more aware of how to report problems associated with short-term rentals. Parsons housing effort includes 3D-printed houses

2022-09-02T07:19:52-05:00September 2nd, 2022|

3D Printing is becoming more common across the world, but instead of using it to print toys or machines, some people are using it in other ways. "It was kind of serendipity and fell out of the sky, it's exactly what we've been looking for," said Leland Crooks, Mayor of Parsons. Thanks to the construction company Alquist, the City of Parsons could potentially see a solution to its housing issue. The catch, instead of building it the old-fashioned way, these new homes will use a giant 3D printer. Source: KSNF/KODE
