The Emporia City Commission will hold its Aug. 5 and Aug. 19 meetings virtually following multiple threats made against city commissioners by individuals from across the nation. According to a news release issued Monday, the city said the decision was made “in the interest of public safety” and is intended to help protect elected officials, city staff and members of the public while allowing city business to continue. The move comes as the commission has received numerous threats in recent weeks related to ongoing discussions surrounding the proposed Flint Hills Digital Campus project. City officials said the threats have originated from individuals both within and outside Kansas, including people from across the country.
The meetings will begin at 11 a.m. and will be conducted in accordance with the Kansas Open Meetings Act. Members of the public may watch the meetings live through the city’s website. Unlike typical commission meetings, no public comment period will be offered during either virtual meeting. Residents who wish to comment on agenda items are encouraged to submit comments before the meeting by emailing citycommission@emporiaks.gov or calling 620-343-4289. The city said it remains committed to conducting public business in an open and transparent manner while taking reasonable steps to ensure public safety. Meeting agendas and supporting materials will continue to be posted on the city’s website before each meeting. City officials described the virtual format as a temporary measure while safety concerns are addressed.
