People will soon donate and borrow books at 10 new little libraries in North Salina.
Barb Young, the president of North Salina Community Development, the organization creating the little libraries, said the program aims to allow children to access books who may not be able to easily visit the Salina Public Library.
“We are getting these out in neighborhoods for low- and moderate-income folks that maybe don’t have easy access,” Young said.
The little libraries are being created from refurbished Salina Journal newspaper racks. North Central Community Development received a $3,500 grant from GL Huyett, in Minneapolis, Kan., to refurbish the racks.
The Salina City Commission unanimously approved an agreement Monday afternoon to allow the organization to place eight of the little libraries next to OCCK bus stops and one next to the Salina Drive Thru Recycling Center. One little library will be placed on private property.
