The city will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5 p.m. today on North Walnut Street between 28th and 29th streets.
City officials say the purpose is to celebrate the completion of an environmental cleanup effort at the former Weir City Zinc Works site. The former smelting plant was previously identified as an “orphan site,” meaning that the entities responsible for pollution were unknown or unable to pay for its cleanup.
By collaborating with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and current property owners Bob and Sandra Boys, the city was able to complete the remediation of the land and break ground on an extension of North Walnut Street.
