Mandatory evacuation issued for Elwood; Hiawatha city employees helping man barricades

The City of Elwood issued a mandatory evacuation around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday when the Missouri River levels reached 30 feet.

By Friday morning, the river had reached 31.45 feet, but the levees were still holding. The projected crest is still set at 31.5 feet later on Friday.

“Our levee is intact with no current over topping. Right now we are still dry, the next few hours are very critical. Thought and prayers to all involved,” according to the City of Elwood Facebook post.
