Michael and Katie Wyse didn’t get the answer they were looking for from the Miami County Planning Commission regarding their desire to construct a home in the county using cargo containers, but they’re hopeful that Miami County commissioners will have a different opinion.
The Wyses were present at the March 5 Planning Commission meeting, during which county planning commissioners continued their debate about whether or not cargo storage containers should be allowed to be used as residential building material.
The discussion began last fall and has continued during multiple Planning Commission meetings. Cargo containers currently are allowed in the county to be used for storage, but they must be screened, and there is a limit of three per property. The county’s zoning regulations would need to be modified to allow the units to be used as residential structures because they currently are listed under the “Uses Prohibited” section unless they are used for storage.
