Atchison residents monitor Missouri River as Nebraska flooding continues

As flooding continues to devastate Nebraska, those who live south of the border are concerned the rising water will seep into northeast Kansas.

Residents in Atchinson, Kansas are monitoring the Missouri River. The river has already risen submerging tables and benches that sit along its banks. Now, people fear that water could soon end up in their homes and businesses. Thirty miles north, driveways are impassible as water comes close to the road and the river hasn’t even crested yet.

Norman Ladesic says his way of preparing is checking out the water every day and crossing his fingers.

“There ain’t no way you’re going to stop it, you know. Mother Nature, if it goes through what’s there, you know, sandbags ain’t going to do no good,” he said.

Flooding in Atchison isn’t unusual, but that doesn’t ease the concern, especially after seeing the devastation to the north in Nebraska and watching it wash down the river.
