In a split vote the Newton Planning and Zoning Board voted against a proposed zoning change to allow for the construction of senior living apartments near Sand Creek Golf Course.

Newton Developer Ron Harder asked for a change of the zoning of a combined 13.2 acres to multi-family residential to allow for a 6.73 acre retirement development.

The development would be built south of Highway 50, along S. Anderson Drive and North of Summer Drive.

That didn’t sit well with nearby residents. According to Newton City Planner Ryan Sellers about 15 people showed up to a public hearing at the meeting to voice their opposition to the change.
He said those against the change had concerns the change in zoning and the facility would decrease the value of their homes.

“They also said when they purchased the property they were told that (the area) would all be single family dwellings.”

The zoning board, five out of eight were present, voted 3-2 against recommending the change.
