Early voting started this week, and one of the key issues being discussed about the ballot is a renewal of a quarter-cent sales tax for economic development.
The tax has come up several times at recent Hiawatha City Commission meetings, and the Hiawatha Foundation for Economic Development has circulated flyers over the past few weeks in an attempt to educate voters on what the sales tax has accomplished, and what they hope to see from it in the future.
During city meetings, the commission has urged voters to renew the tax, stating that current bond payments are funded by the tax, and those payments will eat up other portions of the budget if the sales tax goes away.
