Position: Police Chief

Location: Police Department, Ellsworth, KS Employment Type: Full-time, Exempt Salary: $68,640 – $87,360 (DOE)

 The City of Ellsworth, Kansas is accepting applications for the position of Police Chief. This full-time, exempt role is under the direction of the Mayor, City Administrator and Governing Body. The Police Chief is a highly incumbent managerial position that is active in planning, organizing, and directing the Ellsworth, Kansas Police Department’s goals and focus. The Police Chief is responsible for protecting the life and property of the citizens of Ellsworth, Kansas by performing patrol duties and the investigation of crimes, enforcing Federal, State, Local laws, and ordinances. Department functions include investigations, patrol, and community relations. This employee should possess excellent public relations and communication skills. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 Perform patrol duties including security checks and traffic control

  • Enforce Federal, State, and local laws
  • Respond to all calls for assistance and aid ambulance, fire, and other state agencies when applicable
  • Investigate accident and crime scenes
  • Prepare and complete police reports in a timely manner
  • Inspect and maintain issued equipment
  • Make arrest and issue traffic citations
  • Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects
  • Oversee and participate in the recruitment, selection, development, discipline and evaluation of department employees and their work
  • Participate in the preparation of the City’s codes and ordinances related to the services provided by the Police Department
  • Supervise and participate in special projects and programs as directed by the City Administrator and governing body
  • Participate in local and state law enforcement associations of agency heads
  • Oversee maintenance and repairs of all department equipment including vehicles
  • Ensure all ordinances of the City apply to the safety and wellbeing of citizens are being enforced
  • Manage and maintain a balanced budget by proper upkeep of equipment and managing overtime
  • Enforce safety procedures within the Police Department
  • Other duties as directed.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma required; associate degree preferred
  • Certification from KLETC (or a State with reciprocity) within one year of employment
  • Must Maintain a minimum of forty hours of continuing education annually
  • Valid Kansas Driver’s License
  • Law enforcement experience of 10-years is required with 5-years of progressive leadership and advancement preferred
  • Must have the necessary information and skills to perform the job well immediately upon employment
