Lori Lawrence with the group, “Bag Free Wichita,” says one of the major concerns with the plastic bags, offered by many stores, is how many are made and the fact that their lifespan of actual use is typically small, even though they stick around for a long time.
“There are already so many plastic bags in our environment that we will never see an end to them, even if we ban plastic bags across the world right now,” Lawrence says.
The Environmental Protection Agency says 100 billion single-use plastic bags are used in the U.S. each year, but they’re only used for an average of about 12 minutes.
