The City of Arkansas City and the City-Cowley County Health Department are teaming up to warn citizens about the hidden risk and dangers of flood waters.
“We are aware of instances of children playing in standing water or flood water,” City Manager Nick Hernandez said. “This is a bad idea for many reasons, and parents should be vigilant in preventing it.”
Winfield city officials have also made public announcements about staying staff during flooding, as the region copes with 15 to 20 inches of rainfall since May 1.
“Swiftly moving water from the Walnut River could potentially carry harmful bacteria, as well as electrical current, as not all junction boxes were able to be relocated or deactivated prior to the flooding,” the city posted to Facebook to explain why it closed off the fairgrounds during the first round of flooding.
