After recording $1.7 million in uncompensated care during 2018, Community Memorial Healthcare representatives are — for the fourth year in a row — requesting that the Marshall County Board of Commissioners place a 10-year, half-cent countywide sales tax on the November ballot.
No action was taken on the request at the meeting. However, board Chairman Dave Baier said he was not in favor of tax money for the hospital.
Commissioner Barb Kickhaefer said she supported putting the CMH sales tax up for a public vote, and Commissioner Keith Bramhall said he needed a week to mull over the issue.
CMH’s representatives are slated to meet with the commissioners at 10:30 a.m. next Tuesday. “You’d be amazed how many people we take care of and never see a dime,” chief executive officer Curtis Hawkinson said. “What other business can have someone walk in who owes $10,000 and still be treated? We are the safety net for this county.”
