The Harvey County Jail is making technological changes that will affect the everyday lives of those in the jail — whether they are awaiting court appearances in Harvey County or are federal inmates housed under contract.

Some of those changes aren’t huge — such as the company handling the jail commissary and phone system. But those changes led to one that is big.

Upgraded technology will lead to the availability of video visitation kiosks.

“It will allow the inmate to video visit with their kids on Father’s Day or video visit their kids on their kids’ birthdays,” said Sheriff Chad Gay. “It is one of those things that will help us keep out of fights with them. It is a morale issue. It is a motivator. It is something to keep them motivated or occupied.”
