A Kansas superintendent makes efforts to clear things up about a learning program which has received backlash from some parents and students. This comes after The New York Times released an article about several Kansas districts using it. The new curriculum, called Summit Learning, is centered around an online program in which students complete assignments online and then demonstrate what they’ve learned in the classroom. McPherson school district superintendent Gordon Mohn explains the curriculum is designed for students to learn and progress at their own speed. A piece in the New York Times highlighted multiple parents against the Summit Learning program, some of which even pulled their children from the district altogether. Mohn says Summit Learning is part of a district-redesign process and certain grades are selected to use the web-based curriculum aimed to make individualized instruction for each student.
“I think the (New York Times) article was accurate in (that) we have some people who are very passionately opposed to what we are doing. We recognize that,” Mohn says.
