In just over a month, 19 people who were living on the streets in Topeka have gained housing, it was announced at Friday’s public health and safety committee meeting.
On Feb. 25, the city of Topeka adopted a Housing First approach, which provides housing without other barriers, said Corrie Wright, the city’s director of housing services.
“This is something amazing,” she said.
Although participants aren’t required to participate in such services as mental health or substance abuse treatment, they are doing so, Wright said.
Michal Enloe was one of three people who received keys to their apartments Friday.
“It was awesome,” he said.
The city in June first proposed a ban on camping, which was the major topic discussed at the meeting.
