Leavenworth County commissioners are re-establishing guidelines for making public comments during their meetings.
Commissioner Vicky Kaaz said Wednesday that commissioners were reimplementing a policy regarding the public comment period of their meetings.
“I apologize that it was not adhered to in the past,” she said.
Kaaz’s comments came a week after Tamara Copeland, former human resources director for the county, addressed the commission.
During her March 13 remarks, Copeland argued the county clerk and county treasurer are overpaid and the register of deeds is underpaid.
At one point, Commission Chairman Doug Smith said he was cutting off Copeland because she had talked for about 15 minutes. But Copeland was allowed to continue. Copeland was followed by former Commissioner Bob Holland, who accused the county clerk of not paying taxes.
During Wednesday’s meeting, Kaaz said the policy will help to respect the time of people who come to commission meetings for matters that are on the agenda.
She read the guidelines for public comment, which include limiting remarks to agenda items only and exchanging comments “in a respectful and positive way.”
