Wichita Mayor Jeff Longwell hinting of hundreds of jobs coming to downtown Wichita.
“That would be a big boost to the core area; 700 jobs in the Gander Mountain building. So, it will take tremendous renovations to do that,” said Longwell, during Tuesday night’s city council meeting.
A majority of the meeting was devoted to the private development agreement with Wichita Riverfront LP for four-acres of land adjacent to the former Lawrence Dumont Stadium. Some people have criticized the city for failed attempts to revitalize the east bank of the river.
But, Longwell said this.
“Lot of people kind of taking shots at a former council, former mayor, former group of people that tried to take bold action on Waterwalk. There were a number of issues that happened during that negotiation years ago. None of us sat on this bench then,” said Longwell.
He added, “Everybody can armchair quarterback but Waterwalk did, it got rid of a heck of a lot of blight.”
It was in that same statement that Longwell alluded to more jobs.
“Today there are negotiations going on to put potentially 700 jobs in the Gander Mountain building,” said Longwell.
