Parsons Fertilizer LLC has yet to provide financial information needed to continue its property tax abatement with the State Board of Tax Appeals, Labette County commissioners heard Monday.
The company wants to manufacture a premium-grade fertilizer at the Great Plains Industrial Park east of Parsons and was in the process of renovating Building 920 at the park when fire destroyed half of the leased building on March 4.
Parsons Fertilizer leased 48,539 square feet of space in areas 903, 904 and 920 at Great Plains and was to make an initial $1.2 million investment. Starting off, the company would produce 5-pound and 40-pound bags of fertilizer and then within a year and a half would manufacture 1,000-pound totes for larger agriculture bases. Sales of the product are to be targeted within Kansas, the U.S. and potentially internationally. This information was reported in the Sun in 2017 when the lease was announced.
In 2018, the Kansas Legislature approved property tax abatements for companies that lease buildings in federal enclaves, including Great Plains, which is in the former Kansas Army Ammunition Plant. Parsons Fertilizer received that exemption and was to renew its paperwork for the second of a 10-year exemption period.
Commissioners heard that County Clerk Peggy Minor had not received all the documents necessary for a complete application to BOTA for that renewal.
