The Trego County Rural Fire Department lost a station in WaKeeny to fire on Friday.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but the State Fire Marshall is investigating the blaze that also destroyed the gear of firefighters in Station No. 1 located on the west edge of WaKeeney, according to a press release from Trego County Emergency Management.

The fire was reported just after 2 p.m. Friday with a report flames were coming from the building. WaKeeney City Fire Department responded along with rural fire crews.

The rural department’s four vehicles were able to be moved the building. Crews were on the scene until 6 p.m.

The building is a total loss.

The rural fire company will still be able to respond to fires and wrecks, however, as Western Cooperative Electric offered the use of a building, according to the release.
