The Board of Harvey County Commissioners approved a low bid of $58,890 from Snodgrass & Sons Construction Co. for resurfacing the floor at the transfer station on Monday. And that means a complete shut down of the station while work is completed.

Now it will be up to Solid Waste Director Rollin Schmidt and County Administrator Anthony Swartzendruber to iron out the details to get the project done with as little interruption to trash service as is feasible.

The single shutdown, as opposed to doing work in phases, would reduce the price by $3,400.

“Phasing would be a pain,” Schmidt said.

Swartzendruber said the City of Newton indicated that the longest shutdown it could accommodate would be Wednesday through Sunday. He said the city was “uneasy” about using its trucks to haul trash directly to Reno County. He said the city didn’t feel like its trucks were reliable enough for the extra mileage.

Commissioner Randy Hague said he was concerned what the city was going to do if the county shut down its transfer station for 10 days. He also said the potential savings of $3,400 to have the project done in one phase was “minute” if doing the project in phases helped the city out.
