Hillsboro Community Hospital has been slow to pay employees the past two pay cycles, and it has some in the community wondering if the hospital will stay open.
Workers tell KSN they’ve had late paychecks. They said the hospital owes property taxes from at least last year that are overdue.
A former board member said the company out of Kansas City, who owns the hospital, has had trouble payings bills.
“It’s sad. It’s scary,” said Tom Koslowsky, former Hillsboro Community Hospital board member.
Koslowsky was on the hospital board of directors when the nearly $10 million dollar facility first opened. KSN reached out to Mike Murtha, President of the National Alliance of Rural Hospitals, an advocacy group of which Hillsboro and parent company EmpowerHMS are members.
He said, “the hospital ownership group acknowledges that the recent challenges have been a hardship on the employees and the community, but they are confident that the hospital will continue to serve the community under their leadership; the end of the year is particularly hard on rural hospitals because they pay to deliver services for patients who can’t pay. They are awaiting reimbursements from the federal government to kick in in the coming weeks.”
