Patrolling the streets of Hutchinson and responding to calls is what officer Jake Graber has been doing for years.

And while he knows just about every street in the city, you’ll mainly find him patrolling the north east side.

This year, the Hutchinson Police Department is changing the way it operates by adding two new systems, one of them being the beat system.

“The beat system, specializes in assigning an officer to a specific area of town,” Graber said.

The systems goal: For officers to get to know the community better and learn the issues within their assigned neighborhoods.

“Yeah ideally, we can get to know the business owners, the schools and be on a first name basis with these folks,” he said. “It’s more personable. I’d rather be called Jake than Officer Graber.”
