It is looking increasingly unlikely that Salina will adopt universal curbside recycling, following a meeting of the Saline County Solid Waste Management Committee on Thursday afternoon.
The committee took a series of preliminary votes to help draft recommendations to the Salina City Commission regarding the future of the curbside recycling program and other matters related to waste collection. The committee will take a final vote on a complete recommendation in a future meeting.
Salina residents have the choice of paying the city or a private company to collect their trash.
In a preliminary vote, six committee members voted against recommending the city charge all Salina residents who choose to pay city workers to collect their trash $4 per customer per month for curbside recycling, whether they use the service or not.
Only one committee member, Vice Chair Joan Ratzlaff, voted in favor of universal curbside recycling. Ratzlaff said curbside recycling was the primary method the committee was considering to meet its goal of reducing Salina’s landfill waste.
