Shawnee County commissioners on Monday morning voted 2-1 to approve $3 million in excess reserve funds to help pay for major upgrades at the Kansas Expocentre, placing the price tag on the renovation and construction project at $48 million.

The vote didn’t come without opposition from two citizens who voiced their concerns during a public comment session, however.

And to make sure his sentiment opposing the allocation on Monday was clearly expressed, Commissioner Bob Archer exclaimed “no” when the actual vote was taken.

Voting for the measure were commissioners Shelly Buhler and Kevin Cook.

With the vote, the Expocentre project budget was set at $48 million, paving the way for the massive project to begin.
