State and local authorities are taking action after growing safety concerns caused by the detouring of traffic away from the closed bridge near Arkansas City.

A.J. Wilson, an engineer with Kansas Department of Transportation, was on hand at the Cowley County Commission meeting Tuesday night to address detour complaints caused by the closing of U.S. Highway 166 bridge. The bridge is being replaced and the project is expected to take 18 months.

Local roads, particularly Lovers Lane, have become favored detours for those vehicles used to traversing the Arkansas River over the bridge, which is being replaced and will be closed for an estimated 18 months.

At the Tuesday meeting, Ark City residents described vehicles, including semis, speeding on the roads; near-miss accidents and semis’ becoming stuck when they try to turn around in no-outlet areas.
