Small pop-up parks and playgrounds have appeared throughout Wichita.

One of the newest sites has created some buzz.

“When I first saw them, I thought to myself, ‘What was this?’ said Sabian Powers. “I was just very intrigued by it.”

“I was like, ‘What is this? What are they doing?'” explained Caitlin Herring. “It’s really chill. It’s just a really cool place to go.”

“I think it’s creative. I think it’s nice. I think it’s, like I said, it’s good for the city. It looks good,” said Wichita resident Sean Stewart.

The newest pop-up park is located on Douglas and 135 under the Douglas bridge. It includes several lounge chairs set on what appears to be a gravel and sand mix.

“For Open Streets, what we did was, we used this spot as a gathering spot, kind of a little pop-up park and we decided to keep it here to experiment to see if this would be a good location to put something a little bit more permanent,” said City of Wichita Park and Recreation Director Troy Houtman.

Houtman said the pop-up parks are meant to garner interest and community involvement.

“People want places to be. We want to make this place, Wichita, the best it can be. That’s part of our job as the park and rec department is to create community and we have a lot of different ideas on how we can create community and this is one of them,” Houtman said.
