The Manhattan Town Center (MTC) submitted a petition to establish an additional 0.75% sales tax at the mall shopping center to fund future improvements and upgrades to the interior and exterior common spaces, which the City Commission approved after a public hearing on October 23. The sales tax will likely begin in April 2019, and last for 22 years. The mall will make improvements on a “pay-as-you-go” basis, meaning the City of Manhattan will collect the three-quarter cent sales tax proceeds and distribute to the mall annually. The mall wouldn’t be able to make improvements until funds are available. MTC has a project budget of approximately $20 million worth of improvements over the next 20 years.
The City will receive 10% of the CID sales tax proceeds (estimated $2 million over 22 years) to assist with improvements to the Public Plaza near the MTC entry at 3rd Street and Poyntz Avenue.
