The chairman of the Leavenworth County Commission said he wants to look into withdrawing from the Leavenworth County Port Authority.

“I think we’re wasting money on the Port Authority,” Commission Chairman Louis Klemp said.

He raised the issue Tuesday during a meeting of county commissioners.

The Port Authority is an economic development organization that was created in 1969 through a joint agreement between the city of Leavenworth and county government.

Currently, the county is the only local government that provides funding each year to the Port Authority.

“I think it’s an organization that has gone past its time,” Klemp said. Klemp said he would like for county staff to look at removing the county from the Port Authority and provide information to the commission. Klemp said he believes the Leavenworth County Development Corporation can do the same thing as the Port Authority. LCDC is a partner organization of the Port Authority.
