The Miami County Detention Center soon could start housing prisoners from another county.

County commissioners on Wednesday, Oct. 3, approved an agreement with Franklin County that would allow prisoners to be transferred to Miami County to alleviate overcrowding in the Franklin County jail.

The agreement calls for Franklin County to pay Miami County $45 per day per inmate. Franklin County commissioners have already signed off on the agreement. Any compensation Miami County would receive to house prisoners from another jurisdiction would go into the county’s general fund, County Administrator Shane Krull said.

The Miami County Detention Center, 209 S. Pearl St., can accommodate up to 96 prisoners, with each cell capable of holding two inmates. The detention center averages around 60 to 65 prisoners a day, Undersheriff Wayne Minckley said.
