The chairman of the Leavenworth County is pushing back against the idea that salaries for commissioners should be reduced if the commission is expanded to five members.

Currently, the Leavenworth County Commission has three members. But in November, voters will be asked to consider increasing the number of commissioners to five.

Some have argued the money currently spent to pay salaries for three commissioners should be split five ways if the commission is expanded. This would reduce the salary for an individual commissioner.

But Chairman Louis Klemp has said he intends to propose a salary increase for members of the County Commission.

In a column published Tuesday in the Leavenworth Times, Marti Crow argued against an increase in salaries for county commissioners. She also argued in favor of expanding the commission to five members.

Crow is a former member of the Kansas House of Representatives.
