A vacant Home Quarters store in south Kansas City is set to become the newest Elite Sports facility in the metro.
The Elite Sports Mall, 5000 E. Bannister Road, would include eight indoor courts, an adult workout facility, medical offices, coffee shops and food vendors, as well as outdoor enclosed batting cages. The rezoning request for the project received unanimous approval during Tuesday’s City Plan Commission meeting.
The facility is near Cerner Corp.’s new $4.5 billion, 16,000-job Innovations Campus — which has set off an explosion of growth in south Kansas City and brought an accompanying residential development boom to support the additional residents moving to the area.
The aim of the mall-style facility is to provide “cohesive health and wellness amenities” in addition to the standard sports courts and fields. Work is expected to be finished in late December or early January.
