Barber County Undersheriff Virgil “Dusty” Brewer was put on administrative leave without pay Friday, as he faces a charge of involuntary manslaughter.
Brewer was in a Barber County courtroom Friday morning for his first appearance in the case involving the fatal shooting in October 2017 of Steven Myers. A condition of Brewer’s bond is that he cannot engage in law enforcement. Brewer was appointed undersheriff in 2017 by Sheriff Lonnie Small, who observed the court proceeding.
Brewer’s annual salary is $42,360, according to the Barber County Clerk’s office.
On Oct. 6, 2017, Brewer shot a beanbag round at an unarmed Myers at close range. Body camera video and audio recordings revealed the events that took place in a backyard at Sun City, where Myers died at the scene.
