A group of Winfield citizens presented a petition to the city commission Tuesday asking that the grievance policy be reinstated so fired employees have a way to protest.

The petition was presented by Chris Jarvis, of Winfield. Jarvis told the commission that supporters of reinstating the policy have been assured the commission is working on a replacement, and they are grateful for the time given.

Grievance policies became a big issue for the city after former police officer Sean Skov was fired in May for instigating a traffic stop on Winfield resident Jeremy “Rudy” Samuel that led to accusations of racism and rights violations. The city did have a grievance policy for employees, but it was written out of the employee handbook earlier this year because it was rarely used.

At Tuesday’s meeting, several other citizens spoke up in support of the petition and iterated concerns voiced in earlier commission meetings about employee morale and other fallout from Skov’s firing.

Mayor Greg Thompson said the handbook is being redone, with more employee input than in previous versions.
