The stench of trash wafted across the alley into the neighbor’s backyard.

Like yesterday’s garbage, concerns about people leaving trash to rot or illegally dumping it elsewhere is just one byproduct of a solid waste removal program being examined by the Osawatomie City Council.

In addition to the issue of illegal dumping, the council’s closer look includes determining who the city’s solid waste collection service provider will be, starting in 2019.

The City Council has set a public forum for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 5 at Memorial Hall to gather feedback from the community and to hear from representatives of the two companies bidding for the service.

The city’s contract with Waste Management is set to expire at year’s end. Harrisonville-based WCA is vying to pick up the contract for Osawatomie’s solid waste and recycling collection program.

Representatives from both companies attended the City Council’s meeting Thursday evening, but no one from the public asked to address the council.

“We only had two bidders, the two main players in the region – Waste Management and WCA,” City Manager Don Cawby said.

Concerns surfaced after Waste Management (formerly Louisburg-based L&K Services) took over billing several months ago.
