After hearing Bucyrus residents raise concerns about large explosions caused by Tannerite, Miami County commissioners are taking action to try and find ways to regulate the binary explosive.

Monique Barnard and Steve Kerr of Bucyrus spoke during the public comment portion of the June 20 commission meeting, and they said their neighbor has been using Tannerite to set off loud explosions.

The explosions didn’t just recently start, either. Barnard and Kerr said the explosions began last year, and they continue, with the most recent being around 9 p.m. the Saturday before they spoke to the commission.

“Some shake our houses,” Barnard said. “It shook the pictures off of our neighbor’s wall.”

The Bucyrus residents said they have contacted the sheriff’s office, but they were told that Tannerite is legal in Kansas. They asked the commission to consider banning Tannerite in Miami County or at least require it to be used for its original intent — long-range target shooting — not creating bombs.

Miami County does not have a noise ordinance, and binary explosives like Tannerite are legal in Kansas, but county commissioners are turning to state legislators for assistance.

Administrator Shane Krull said Miami County can submit legislative platform suggestions to the Kansas Association of Counties for support, and the Miami County Commission agreed to do just that earlier this month.
